How to tell if a handbag actually suits your body

Proportion is everything, and a product shot tells you almost nothing about it. Here's how to read a bag on a body — yours.

The product shot is lying to you (a little)

A handbag photographed on a white background or hanging off a 5'11" model is optimised to sell the bag — not to tell you how it reads on your body. Scale, strap drop, and where the bag lands on your torso change the whole silhouette, and none of that survives a flat lay.

The two bags you're deciding between might be 3cm apart in a spec sheet and worlds apart on you. Proportion is the single biggest driver of whether a bag looks intentional or borrowed.

Three things that decide the silhouette

Scale relative to your frame: a petite frame is easily swallowed by an oversized tote; a taller frame can make a micro bag look like an afterthought. Aim for a bag that reads as roughly one-third to one-half of your torso width.

Strap drop and carry height: where a shoulder or crossbody bag lands — hip, high hip, or waist — either lengthens or cuts your line. A shorter drop reads polished and elongating; a low slouch reads casual.

Structure vs. slouch: a structured bag holds a clean line and dresses an outfit up; an unstructured hobo softens everything. Neither is better — but they do opposite jobs, and your outfit usually already picked one.

The two-minute test that skips the guessing

The honest shortcut is to just see the bag on your own body, at your own proportions. That's exactly what Nabi does: upload a selfie and a photo of the bag, and it places it on you, photoreal, with matched light and shadow and your face unchanged.

Try the two sizes you're torn between and look at them side by side on you, not on a mannequin. Your eye will decide in about two seconds — it just needs the right picture to decide from.
